Threshold Days: Rankings and How Many Days Above or Below

How many days a year reach 40 C, 100 F, freezing or 50 mm of rain? Rankings of cities for 2026 and all time, 25 fixed thresholds and a custom explorer.

Key Facts

  • 25 fixed thresholds are counted for every city and station: temperature, precipitation and snowfall.
  • In 2026, Phoenix had the most days days at or above 40 c (104 f): 98.
  • The most in a single year is 129, at Phoenix in 2024.
  • Years with under 90 percent of days observed are left out of every ranking and trend.

How the Counts Work

  • A threshold day is a day when a station's daily maximum, minimum, precipitation or snowfall is at or beyond a fixed value.
  • Fahrenheit thresholds are converted to tenths of a degree Celsius once, rounding half up, so 100 F is 37.8 C (378 tenths).
  • For each year we keep the count, the first and last qualifying date and the longest run of consecutive days inside the year.
  • A year with data on fewer than 90 percent of its days is flagged and left out of rankings and trend lines.
  • City pages use the threaded city record, and show which station supplied each year.
  • A fixed page such as days above 40 C exists for a city only when it has at least 5 qualifying years; the combined page always lists every threshold.
